About Sales Market
Sales Market brings together two disciplines I’ve developed a genuine interest in over many years: sales and marketing. Alongside my background in recruitment and running businesses, I’ve studied marketing and continue to read widely about both subjects, following the ideas, trends and technology that are changing how businesses find, engage and retain customers.
I don’t profess to be an expert in either discipline. Part of the appeal is that there is always more to learn. That gives me a particular respect for sales and marketing professionals who remain curious about their work, develop their skills and adapt as their markets change - and for businesses that understand just how important good sales and marketing are to commercial success.
Sales Market is a job board for those people and those businesses.
Why these categories
Sales and marketing are enormous fields, with considerable overlap between roles. I’ve experimented with different ways of organising them and settled on a deliberately broad set of categories that I think reflects both the market and the people using the site.
The aim isn’t to create a category for every possible specialism. It’s to make Sales Market straightforward to navigate while recognising the different skills, environments and career paths that make up modern sales and marketing.
Account Management
Good business isn’t only about winning customers; it’s about keeping and developing them too. Account Management recognises the people who build lasting commercial relationships, understand their customers and help those relationships grow over time.
B2B
Selling to businesses brings its own challenges, from understanding complex requirements to navigating longer buying processes and multiple decision-makers. B2B provides a broad home for people whose sales expertise is focused on the business-to-business market.
Brand & Communications
How an organisation presents itself and communicates can be every bit as important as what it sells. Brand & Communications recognises the people who shape identity, reputation and messaging, and help businesses communicate clearly with the audiences that matter to them.
Business Development
Business Development is about finding and creating opportunity. It brings together the people who identify new markets, establish relationships, develop partnerships and help businesses find new ways to grow.
Content, SEO & Social
These disciplines have become central to how organisations are discovered and how they communicate. Content, SEO & Social brings together creativity, communication and an understanding of how people search, discover, share and engage with businesses online.
Digital Marketing
Digital has become an integral part of modern marketing rather than simply another channel. This category recognises the people using digital platforms, tools and technology to reach audiences, build engagement and support wider marketing objectives.
Field Sales
There remains enormous value in getting out, meeting customers and building relationships directly. Field Sales recognises the people who represent businesses in their markets, develop opportunities face-to-face and turn personal relationships into commercial results.
Financial Services
Financial services is a substantial commercial sector with its own products, customers, regulations and sales environments. Giving it a dedicated category makes sense for the range of sales and commercially focused roles found across banking, insurance, finance and related services.
Inside Sales
Sales doesn’t have to happen face-to-face. Inside Sales recognises the people developing opportunities and winning business remotely, using the phone, digital communication and increasingly sophisticated technology to connect with customers and build relationships.
Performance Marketing
Marketing should ultimately achieve something. Performance Marketing reflects the increasingly measurable side of the discipline, where data, testing and continual improvement are used to understand what works and produce better commercial results.
Product Marketing
Great products still need to be understood by the people they are designed for. Product Marketing sits at the intersection of product, customer and market - helping businesses understand who their products are for, how they should be positioned and how their value should be communicated.
Retail & FMCG
Retail and FMCG bring sales and marketing together in one of their most visible forms. From understanding consumers and building brands to merchandising, selling and responding to changing buying behaviour, it’s a natural part of the Sales Market mix.
Why sales and marketing?
Sales and marketing are distinct disciplines, but they’re closely connected. Both depend on understanding people and markets, communicating value and creating the conditions in which businesses can grow.
They’re also constantly changing. Technology, data, new channels and changing customer behaviour continue to reshape how the work is done, which is one of the reasons I continue to find both subjects so interesting.
The tools will change, and the terminology will evolve, but businesses will continue to need people who can understand customers, communicate ideas, build relationships, create demand and generate commercial opportunities.
That combination of people, ideas and commerce is what interests me - and what I want Sales Market to represent.
